“Reggie it’s fine. I can leave when I get tired. Besides watching you might persuade me to try it. One on one maybe.” Cassandra teased as he hugged her and went to play. After she took a seat on the bench’s table she leaned back and watched them chose their players and they began to play. Boys and their games, what was the big fuss about it. Well now was her chance to find out.

"Funny seeing you here." Tad said as he threw his soda away and sat next to Cass.
He had the day off, so after he got a few things done, he wanted to take a walk around the park. Plus Kathy was with him. He hadn't expected to see Cassandra there. He looked over and made sure he could see Kathy playing before turning back to Cassandra.
"So what are you doing here and why are you just sitting here?" he asked finally noticing the boys playing basketball.
"Oh!" he said leaned back on his hands. "Yea Jesse told me about it. Good guy. Very good." he said wondering if she was going to flip and accidentally tell him who she was here with. "Ok for real, which one of those knuckle heads are you here with?"

Occupied with the game she didn’t even know somebody was standing near her until they spoke. Looking up she saw Tad, “Hey Tad!” she said as he sat down next to her. She looked back over at Reggie and saw he just made a shot was doing a victory dance. She thought it was cute. Cassandra smiled not even hearing Tad’s question. Until he mentioned Jesse. Her head whipped the other way.
“Jesse didn’t tell you anything because I know he doesn’t want me around him. So he wouldn’t even mention his name.” Cass pointed out as Tad finally caught on and just asked her straight out.
She blushed. “I’m here with Reggie and he is not a knuckle head. Besides we are just friends. There is nothing wrong with friends watching friends play basketball.” She rambled on before glancing at Tad. “Ok give it to me… You know you are Uncle Thaddeus.” she teased with a smile.
After she and her mother moved to New York, she and Tad hit it off real good. He would take a weekend off and come visit. They would just hang out and catch up. She looked to Tad as family and what better name to call him than Uncle. He gave her good advice and there wasn’t a time he never told them what he was thinking. No matter how crazy it was.

“Friends eh?” He joked with a chuckle.
Tad looked at her. “I wasn’t going to say anything expect be careful. I always tell you that but I mean it. Be careful. Don’t get me wrong, Reggie is a good guy. Good as they come, does anything to protect the people he cares about. I do mean anything.” he warned.
He kept out the part about Reggie coming from a crazy background. He was sure if Cass wanted to know more she would ask him.
“Look.. You seem happy being just “friends” but don’t let him pressure you. He isn’t like that I know but just be careful.”

Cass moved closer to Tad and hugged him. “I will be very careful. But can you promise me something… Please talk to Jesse… Momma has tried, I’ve tired but he isn’t budging. It’s like he and Jacob switched places.” she said seriously. Every time she was on the phone with Reggie, Jesse would walk by and say, Phone curfew is at eight. The time is 8:01. He was being her father in more ways than one. She liked that he was trying but she just wanted some space. Of course she never got off the phone until she felt like it. Sometimes she and Reggie would hold the phone and just say nothing.
She looked up at Reggie who was waving at her. One of his friends caught him and ran to the basket. Getting a shot. Laughing she stuck her tongue out at him. “Tad I know all about his past. He told me everything he been through and I told him it was in the past. So I know how dangerous he was and I know he is very protective. You don’t have to worry about me being left in the dark where his past in concerned.”
“But thank you for watching out for me. It means a lot to me.” Cass smiled and playfully punched his stomach. “So what’s been going on with Tad the Cad?”

“I’ll try my best with Jesse but I can’t promise he’ll lighten up any. I mean the man is very protective over his family as well. But I’ll make a deal with you.. I’ll make sure he doesn’t do what Angie’s father did to them. Not saying you can’t make it out just saying I wouldn’t want you going through what Angie went through. Sneaking out the house to be with him. Lying. It’s a lot.” Tad knew Jesse was a hard task but he figured he could handle it. The outrage, the yelling, the rolling of the eyes. He could handle it plus it would be quite funny to put out there, you are acting like Les Baxter.
Tad looked down when she asked about him. “I’m doing good. Working like crazy. Coming home tired but still have to catch my second wind. The norm.” he chuckled.
"I uh.. I came across something that may catch your eye. I had to stop by some woman's house get some information and she was painting. Said she was looking for young artist to mentor. You think you might be interested?"

“Well I know you can handle. Tad can handle anything.” Cassandra said knowingly. She glanced back at Reggie and saw him into the game. She turned back to Tad when he mention something that may catch her eye.
When he said a woman was looking for a young artist, Cass perked up. She never had a problem with putting her art out there. But there was nothing wrong with it being everywhere and learning more when she could. “Of course I would be interested. Tell me when and where and I’ll be there.” she said happily. “Did you say something about me?” she asked curiously.

Tad was appalled. “No I didn’t say anything. She was talking about the program and your name just happened to come up. Nothing much.” he said as Kathy called his name. “Ok I need to go, I promised her I would take her to get something good to eat. Anyway you enjoy your time with your “friend.” and give the woman a call.” he said handing her a card with the woman’s name and number on it.
“Nice chatting with you. Oh give your mother and sister a kiss for me.” Tad hugged her and ran off.
“So if I kept you waiting, had to handle some business.”
“I know. Come on I want something to eat.”

“Ha! 20-12! Loser!” Reggie teased as he started doing a dance and bounced the ball across the court. He put an L on his forehead and kept dancing. “Practice a little more.”
Reggie danced off the court and ran over to Cass. “You saw that! I was like whoo, whoo, bam!” he imitated the play and held his hand up. “Score!”
“Ok that’s enough I’m tired.” Reggie said out of breath as he sat down and took the water that was sitting on the table. After a couple of minutes of catching his breath he looked up at Cass. “So what was Tad the Cad talking about?” he asked taking the towel from her lap and wiped his face.

After hugging Tad she looked at the card. She was surely going to call this woman when she got home. Cass slipped the card in her jean pocket and looked up just in time to see Reggie make a shot and start dancing. Laughing at how cute it was, she did a little cheer for him. “Did I see that? That was good.” she said when he did a replay and looked so happy doing it. Basketball was his passion she could see it in his eyes.
“You did good. Trash talking was perfect, she teased. She let Reggie catch his wind. “Me and Tad were just talking. Like always.” Cass slid off the table and sat on the bench beside him. “So what is it going to take to get you to show me how to play?” she asked as he looked at her as if she was playing.
Cass picked up the ball one of the boys rolled over to her and started bouncing it. “Come on, you say you can do anything. How about showing a good two shoes like me how to handle orange betty.” She stood up and took her cell and keys out her pocket and put them in Reggie’s bag.
“Or are you chicken. You afraid a girl is going to embarrass you?” she teased throwing the ball from one hand to the other.

“Yea right.” Reggie laughed when she brought up showing her how to play. She started bouncing the ball and Reg saw she was serious. She even called it by it’s name. Orange Betty. How many girls honestly knew that term.
“I’m not chicken. I just wouldn’t want you breaking a nail.” he teased back as she kept egging him on. Reggie never backed down from a challenge. Finishing off the bottle of water he threw it away and held his hand out for the bottle.
“Check!” he said as she threw him the ball and he threw it back. This was going to be fun and it would give him a chance just to see how out-going Cassandra really was.

Cassandra started bouncing the ball. Something she learned from the boys just a few minutes ago. Reggie tried to distract her by playing the staring game but she knew better. She let him stare a while before running around him and running to the basket. She jumped up and…. “Loser!” she teased catching the ball and walking around Reggie.
“I told you never to underestimate what I could do.” she giggled. “I believe it’s my turn. Again…” She said teasingly as she went back up to him and teased him with the ball. Cass started laughing when he started popping his neck. She bounced the ball one time and Reggie reached out to get it. He missed it. She got in place to make the shot and he tried to block her.
“Your really going to let your girlfriend lose the game?” she asked cutely.

“My girl…What?” he asked as she smiled and ran around him making another basket. She tricked him and tricked him good.
“Nice way to throw me off.” he chuckled already coming up with a plan. Moving closer he got in position to block her shot. She tried to run one way but he trapped her, same with the other way. They now stood face to face.
“Give me ya best shot.” Reggie coached making it seem like he was on her side. Cass stood up to make it and Reggie caught her off guard by pulling her close to him.
He stared into her eyes, looking for any signs that maybe he should stop but there was nothing. She dropped the ball and they began to kiss. Reggie draped his arms around her waist, holding her close.

Cass was having a lot of fun. The look on Reggie’s face when he realized what she said was funny as heck! She didn’t stare to long as she ran up and made the shot. “You I thought so too.” Cass giggled when he praised her on the trick. Staring at him, ready to make the next one and the next one, she stood up, bent her knees a little. Just as she was about to let go of the ball he pulled her flush against him. It scared her at first.
She knew the next move and did nothing to stop it. He inched closer and closer. Her hand let the ball go and she slipped them around his neck. It was like they did this everyday. When his lips touched her’s it was like the first time. To say it was amazing, not even close. The kiss was sweet, needy, too needy for them. She didn’t want the kiss to end but she knew it would lead to something she just wasn’t ready for. Pulling away was the hardest thing she ever had to do.
Finally she did, “As…mu… As much as I love that and I do… I can… We can’t.” Cass barely said as he looked at her with questions. “Kissing leads to something else and I’m not ready for that yet. You are a good guy. A great guy but we need to… Slow down.”

Her ending the kiss worried him. “We can’t?” he asked as she sighed and began to explain it to him.
“Ok. I understand but you do know I couldn’t pressure you into anything. This is going at your pace. Whatever you chose I am in it with you.” Reggie looked down. “I guess you sort of have me in daze. I never admit this but I have no choice.”
Reggie nodded. “But I understand you want to take it slow. Besides we still have a lot to learn about each other.”
