It had been a few weeks since Kathy had started back at school. But Dixie couldn't help but notice her little girl had been on the quiet side lately. She hadn't been in an outright bad mood, but hadn't been her bubbly chatty self either. And Dixie was hoping maybe a little mother daughter time would cure her of that.
After picking Kathy up at school, instead of turning down the street to get home, she drove towards the center of town and parked the car near the main drag. It was a beautiful fall day out and she figured why drive when they could walk a little bit. Once Kathy got out of the car though, she was understandably confused, getting Dixie chuckling a bit as she knelt to her level.
"So you know sunshine, I was thinking, with your Aunt Di watching the twins and your dad working late..since you said you didn't have any homework tonight, hows about we go do a little shopping and then go out to dinner?" The older blond offered with enthusiasm, brushing some stray hair behind Kathy's ear. "I was just thinking it's been awhile since we had a girl's day you know? Just the two of us? It's up to you though, okay? If you wanna go home just say the word. I just thought I'd ask." She smiled, curious to see what her daughter thought.

Kathy had gathered up all her school things and headed out to the car, not surprised to see her mom waiting there for her. However she was surprised to see them not turn down their street and instead head into town. She didn’t have school work, but she hadn’t been expecting this... Hopping out she looked around and then over at her mom when she kneeled down to her.
“You mean it? We can?” she asked her in surprise, her face lighting up. “I would love to go shopping and have dinner together!” She reached out and took her moms hand before an idea came to her and she met her moms eye. “Can we go shopping for Halloween costumes? I don’t know what I want to go as this year, do you?” For a minute she paused as she remembered something someone had said at school and she bit her lip. “I’m not too old to go trick-or-treating am I? Someone at school said only babies do that, but I’m not a baby and trick-or-treating is still fun...”

"Yes, of course we can!" Dixie laughed, all smiles when Kathy's face lit up like a Christmas tree. And when she took her hand, granted Dixie had been back in her daughter's life for quite some time, but moments like this still always made her melt, and reminded her just how lucky she was to be in her daughter's life. "Sure! You know I'm not too sure yet either, but once we get to the store we'll help each other decide, sound good?" She asked, but didn't get a response, just Kathy lowering her eyes. And immediately Dixie's smile faded. "Sunshine?" Hearing her daughter tell her what happened at school, sighing she gave her a sympathetic smile. "Oh honey no, you're not too old. Far from it! So long as you think trick-or-treating's fun you can do it for as long as you like. And no, going out and celebrating Halloween does not make you a baby. I mean when Nolan and Tara were born they couldn't even go out for trick-or-treat, they were too little to enjoy it." Holding Kathy's hand they kept walking down the street. "And you know, your dad and I are proof you're never too old for Halloween. He and I would dress up almost every year. Once we went as vampires, another year Antony and Cleopatra, even a magician and his assistant! I may even have my old Snow White costume packed up in a box someplace.", she smiled. "I think we could do a little more than trick-or-treat this year though, it's been awhile since we did a haunted house for Halloween..we used to have some really spooky ones when your brothers were growing up." Dixie mused, wondering if maybe Tad would be okay with starting that tradition again.

Kathy’s smile widened tenfold as her mom agreed to go shopping for Halloween costumes with her. She could remember a few years back after the tornado hit Pine Valley that she had gone out as a princess while AJ went as a tiger, but her mom hadn’t been around back then (OOC: Had she? In the show no), and she had reused old costumes before when her mom had returned.
“It sounds perfect mommy!” she exclaimed, jumping up in excitement before the excitement dimmed a little in her eyes. She listened quietly to her moms answer about Halloween not being just for babies and her eyes met her moms again. “I remember when they were littler, we had to get their candy for them and they couldn’t eat it either so we split it all up and shared with AJ and JR.” She nodded at the memory and squeezed her moms hand as they walked down the street.
“You and daddy dressed up as all of them?” she asked in surprise. “Was daddy the magician? He knows all kinds of magic tricks and when we first met he pulled quarters out of my ear.” Her nose crinkled as she giggled at the memory and then something else. “You were there too, and we played Lucky Ducks, with Jamie and AJ, only he was Little Adam back then.” She paused and then got another idea. “Do you think when we get home we could find all your old costumes? I’d love to see them.” When her mom suggested doing more than trick-or-treating she frowned and tilted her head before it straightened again and she grinned.
“A real haunted house?” Kathy gasped in awe. “With monster brains? I would love to do a haunted house! Could all my friends come over? And JR and AJ and everyone? I can help decorate too.” She was grinning ear to ear as they stopped in front of the costume store and Kathy ran forward, pressing her nose against the glass. “There’s so many in there.” As she retook her moms hand and went inside she looked around at all the beautiful and spooky costumes lined up on the shelves.
“I don’t know what I want to be mommy...” she started and then spotted something on a shelf, tugging her moms hand along until they were standing in front it. “You should be Tinkerbell. You look like Tinkerbell.” She pointed at the costume and quickly looked to see what her mom thought. “And daddy can be Peter Pan!” OOC: Tell me you didn't see that one coming

(OOC: On the show no, on the board, hmmm, not sure LOL. :/) "I remember that too. This year though look out. Nolan's got as bad a sweet tooth as your father." Dixie smirked, then nodded about the costumes. "Yes he was, you know he called himself the Great Martini?!" She giggled, before Kathy brought up the first afternoon they'd spent together. A day that was close to Dixie's heart even though at the time, she didn't know she was spending it with her own daughter. Back then after what had happened with Emma a part of her was afraid to believe or trust her instincts at all. She knew though if she'd listened to them she'd have figured the truth out, a lot sooner. "You bet! I'm pretty sure most of them we hung onto. And if not I'll dig out the photo albums and track down some pictures." Seeing how enthused Kathy was over the haunted house Dixie knew there was no backing out now. "Monster brains, ew!", she grimaced. But nodded happily at the invite list. "We'll invite as many as the house can hold, hows that sound?", she asked. And got a quick nod before Kathy ran up to the window at the costume shop. "I should say so. Sheesh, wonder how we'll choose!" Wondering if she'd live to regret going in, having visions of them browsing the aisles for hours in search of perfect costumes, Dixie was happily proven wrong when Kathy dragged her to the first shelf she laid eyes on. "Okay okay don't pull my arm outta the socket!", she laughed. Only to have her daughter declare she looked like a cartoon pixie. Blushing, she brushed a lock of hair behind her ear, realizing about five other people in the aisle overheard that. "Yes, well...you um, may just be right about that." She sighed with a smile. That broadened when she suggested Tad go as Peter Pan. And all it took was her picturing her husband in that green cap to realize she couldn't pass this up. "Sunshine, I think that's a fantastic idea. But let's make sure you're the one to suggest it to Daddy, alright?" Dixie chuckled. "Alright well now that you got him and I taken care of, see anything that works for you?" She asked. But from the look on Kathy's face it was clear nothing was really striking her fancy. "Hmmm, well what about someone from, I dunno, one of those cartoons you and your dad would always watch Sunday mornings?", she suggested, only because there was an upcoming aisle devoted to costumes for that sorta thing. (OOC: LOL. )

“Does that mean you’ll go as Tinkerbell, if daddy goes as Peter Pan?” Kathy asked with wide eyed enthusiasm and excitement. “We can ask him when we get home and then come back out tomorrow for the costumes.” The idea was already set in her head, though she knew she had to be patient and ask first. When her mom brought her back to the fact that she didn’t have a costume she frowned and looked around.
“I don’t see anything...” she mumbled still looking all over. “Do you?” When her mom mentioned going as someone from her favourite Sunday morning cartoons she headed for an aisle she noted had cartoon like costumes and started examining each one.
“Maybe... maybe I could go as Bubbles,” she said and pointed at the costume with its blue dress and black stripe. “From the Powerpuff Girls.” She giggled at the thought before nodding and turning to face her mom. “She has blonde hair like me and she puts the bad guys away like Uncle Jesse does. Do you think that would be okay?”

"Well I don't think I'd have much of a choice!", Dixie laughed. Not minding that in the least. "That sounds fine to me!"
Watching as Kathy made her way past the costume racks, she bit her lip wondering if her daughter would find something here or not. Until she spotted the blue dress from some cartoon, with a name Dixie squinted at the label to see. Powderpuff maybe? "Oh, Powerpuff Girls...yeah!" She exclaimed, not having watched that show a day in her life. But if Kathy liked it, that was enough. "Sure! The blue in the dress even matches your eyes a little bit. And she seems to be a take charge kinda girl, like you. Yeah, Bubbles is the way to go. Definitely.", smiled Dixie. "We can pick it up tomorrow when we get the other costumes. And we can bring Nolan and Tara along too, see what they wanna dress up as." Happy that was taken care of, Dixie looked over a few aisles down towards the decorations. "As long as we're here though, you wanna go look at decorations really quick, get some ideas for the haunted house?"

Kathy was so pleased that her mom was going to go as Tinkerbell, she knew it was going to be perfect, especially if they got her dad to go as Peter Pan. If he didn’t want to, she’d be a little upset but she could understand that he’d want to go as whatever he wanted. Looking up as her mom approached and she held up the dress for her to see.
“Yeah!” she exclaimed with a huge grin and blushed as her mom mentioned it matching her eyes. “I’ll kick bad guys butts, and help people too.” She put the dress back down, folding it as best she could and then turned back to her mom. “Do you think they’ll know what they want to be already? Nolan would be a good pirate and Tara...” She looked around undecidedly for her sister and then back at her mom. “... she could be a princess.”
“Yes! Okay,” Kathy agreed when her mom suggested they go look at the Halloween decorations down the next aisle. She skipped off towards it excitedly and then gave a startled cry as a severed hand started to move on its own across the floor. Running immediately back over to her mom she hid behind her and peeked out. “It’s moving on its own!” She pointed at it and looked up to make sure her mom saw it too.

"Sounds like a plan.", Dixie grinned at the butt kicking remark. "Well I dunno, we'll have to see." Hearing the costume suggestions though she smiled. They seemed perfect to her. "Hey, those sound great! Nolan as a little pirate, I can just picture it. And Tara's the princess of the family and she knows it."
Walking, as Kathy skipped, over towards the decorations, Dixie panicked when her daughter yelped and ran to hide behind her. "Baby what is it, I...oh! Eeek!!, she exclaimed, jumping back as it got closer. Before she started to laugh out loud. Here she was a grown woman getting freaked out by a fake hand. Shaking her head she sighed. "Wow..thank goodness your dad wasn't here to see us just now, he'd never let us live it down." Bending down she picked up the hand and examined it, making sure to flip the off switch before showing it to Kathy. "See? Not so icky when it can't move on you.", Dixie chuckled. "I dunno, you think we should get it? It did a pretty good job freaking us out."

Kathy bit her lip when her mom jumped the moment she saw the hand, a part of her wanting to jump out and protect her, but another one telling her she wasn’t sure what else the hand could do. When her mom started to laugh she gave her a quizzical look before watching as she picked it up and turned it off.
“If daddy saw us I think he’d be on the ground laughing,” she agreed. Looking at the hand curiously, Kathy reached out and poked a few of the fingers with her own, wriggling slightly at how the plastic felt upon touch. She had to agree, it was just a plastic hand when it wasn’t moving, but once it started crawling it looked real enough and as her mom spoke she nodded, a smile widening.
“Do you think we can scare daddy with it?” she asked nodding that they should. “And we can make it crawl after him when he sits down.” She giggled at the thought of seeing her dad squirm before glancing around the rest of the aisle. “And we can get...” She went over and pulled a roll of caution tape off a shelf. “Make it look like a monster did it.” She pulled a few other things off the shelf; a plastic bat, a pumpkin bowl and a giant spider. “We can put the candy for trick-or-treaters in this, and decorate with these, and... and cobwebs! Lots of them for this big spider.” She gave her mom a smile before her stomach rumbled and she blushed.
“I think I’m getting hungry now,” she said and then looked up to see what her mom was up to.

"Well we can certainly try!", chuckled Dixie. Pretty sure that Kathy wanted to get the hand. Following her daughter's wandering eyes, Dixie saw her grab some caution tape and other little decorations. "Here, let me get something to put all the stuff in, baby." Grabbing a nearby basket she helped Kathy grab a few more things from the shelves, nodding at all her ideas. Before she heard a rumbling sound and glanced at her daughter's now pink cheeks. "Yeah I think so! I think we oughta try and do something about it." Feeling hungry herself she figured they could find someplace around here and get an early dinner. "Alright let's get this stuff paid for and then we'll head over to the car. You know I think a pizza place just opened up around here, maybe we could go there?", she asked as they walked over to pay for the decorations.

Kathy had spotted one last decoration she was putting into the basket when her mom agreed to being hungry as well and she blushed deeper. She knew she’d had a small snack at recess but that had been at least an hour or two ago, and lunch had been long since over. Nodding she looked once more into the basket to make sure everything was all there before up at her mom again.
“Pizza!” she exclaimed happily and threw her hands up. “Yeah! Can we bring home Nolan, Tara and daddy a slice after we’re done?” She helped her mom to the counter with the basket and started putting the stuff out so the lady could scan the items. When it was time to pay Kathy fished out a few dollars and put them in her moms hand, an unusual thing for her to do when her allowance was mostly spent on candy.
“Will this help?” she asked with a small smile before her stomach rumbled again and she giggled softly, trying to hide her blush.

"Yeah I think that's our best bet, sunshine. We gotta make sure and get extra pepperoni on your dad's slice though, alright?", Dixie smiled. If she came home sans pizza for her husband and the twins there would be heck to pay. Pulling out her wallet she greeted the woman at the register and was set to swipe her credit card. Until she saw Kathy reach into her pocket and pull out some crumpled bills, placing them in her palm. "Oh, Kathy!" Shaking her head in awe Dixie sighed, smiling at the sweetness of it all. The look on her little girl's face was enough to make her, and even the woman behind the counter, melt. "Sweetheart it's okay, look you keep your money, alright?", she insisted, but was met with a confused frown. "Baby it's fine, I promise!", Dixie assured. "I love that you offered to and it's so sweet of you, but we're all gonna enjoy these decorations and things at the party. There's no reason why you should put your own allowance towards them. You've earned that money and you should spend it on things for you. You understand?" The blond asked gently, folding the money back into Kathy's hand before she heard more stomach rumbling. And she was sure that time she'd been showing a little hunger too. It was time they get a move on for some dinner..she hadn't realized how hungry she was til then and there.

Kathy nodded in agreement with the decision to bring home pizza for the others, she knew they would be upset if they didn’t get any. She gave her mom a big smile and the thumbs up when she said extra pepperoni on her dads slice, putting it away to remember before they lift the pizza place. With a confused look at her mom, Kathy slowly put her hand down and nodded at the reassurance.
“I wanted to spend it on the decorations,” she told her and then shrugged a little. “But I suppose I can spend it on something else...” She nodded again and blushed as her mom told her she should spend the money on something for herself instead. As the money was folded into her hand she put it away and when everything was bought and paid for took her hand again and headed out into the now chilly October air.
Making their way back to the car she helped load everything in and shut the doors, glancing around the new pizza place her mom had talked about. When she spotted it, and they were ready, she took her hand and led the way, heading in and finding a spot for them. She picked up the menu and looked over the different kinds of slices before pointing at one.
“Can I get the pepperoni and cheese one, with extra cheese please?” she asked looking over at her mom. She put the menu down and closed it, placing her hands in her lap as she looked around for a minute before down at the table. She could remember a time when she went out to dinner with Aunt Julia before her passing and after her and JR had visited her grave she’d been thinking more and more about her lately.

"Well good, you suppose right then!", Dixie smiled. Still in awe of how sweet and thoughtful her daughter was. Honestly she couldn't have asked for a more adorable little girl. After getting everything along with themselves in the car, they arrived shortly afterwards at the pizza place and went inside. It looked more than up to Dixie's standards so she let Kathy pick out a table. "And I'll have a slice with uh, ham and pineapple please.", she requested. Normally she got just plain cheese but the Hawaiian pizza looked tempting for one reason or another.
After the waitress took their menus, Dixie poured them both some water from the pitcher on the table. But looked over and saw Kathy looking down and lost in her thoughts. She'd been quiet like this the past week or so, and seeing a repeat left Dixie concerned. "Hey sunshine? Kathy?", she called softly, before finally she got her daughter's attention. She looked nervous though, like she was afraid she did something wrong. And right away Dixie set her straight. "No it's okay. Sweetie you're fine, I promise. I just..is something on your mind, baby?", she asked. "You just got quiet and looked a little distracted...is there anything you wanna talk about?", Dixie asked gently. Hoping if it was anything major Kathy would tell her right off the bat.
