It had been a few days since Tara put a crimp in Tad and Dixie's routine turned romantic night. And Dixie had been thinking about what had happened pre-interruption ever since. Things heating up hadn't been planned but it had felt right. Right now her and Tad's marriage was as solid as ever. They were in that ordinary/remarkable place with each other again, and even David resurfacing hadn't interfered. All that was keeping her and her husband apart were their adorable toddlers in the nursery. But tonight thanks to Opal even they wouldn't be an issue, hopefully.
With Kathy at a cheer retreat, after Dixie dropped the twins at Cortlandt Manor (and helped them leave a message for their dad letting him in the plan) she ran a few key errands and then came home to an empty house. Ordinarily the quiet would bum her out, but not tonight.
Checking her watch she had about two hours to get things up to her standards. First on her list, dinner. She'd gotten the honored recipe for homemade chicken fingers from Opal, which beat nuking a bucket of them in the microwave by a long shot. With fries, a bottle of Orsini sparkling cider she'd tracked down, and strawberry shortcake for dessert, she was sure Tad would be pleased. And if the menu wasn't enough the dress she'd just bought, above the knee, off the shoulder, blue gray silk that had set her back a paycheck or two, would probably win him over.
After getting the food going and the cider chilling in the fridge, Dixie set the table with their best dishes and put some music on before going to the back to shower. Once freshened up she put on her dress and a pair of vintage silver heels she'd bought, but saw her reflection and groaned. The skirt of her dress was totally wrinkled. "For crying out loud..." Slipping it off so she was just in her slip, after getting the ironing board from the closet she began steaming out her dress, only to smell something in the kitchen. "What the..." Right away she ran to the front only to have the heel on her new, but still old, shoe crack. Hobbling to the kitchen to her horror there was smoke coming from the oven. "Oh no...shoot!!! Grabbing a potholder she pulled open the door and fanned away the smoke. But pulled out the cooking sheet and wanted to cry, the chicken fingers were charcoal. And the biscuits she'd made for the shortcake were burned to a crisp. "Damn it!!" Tossing the mess into the trash, she rummaged through the fridge hoping to at least get a salad started. But heard someone coming up the walk and cursed. Damn him being annoyingly punctual tonight.
"I...I'll be right there, uh, just a second!!" Shutting the fridge door she made her way over to let him in, but looked down and remembered she was wearing nothing but a slip. "Argh! Hang on!!" Gimping to the bedroom right as Tad got the door open, Dixie realized she'd left the iron on her dress and left a burn print on the silk. Biting her lip she had to fight the urge to cry. Could this night start off any worse?

After their one supposing-ly night alone was interrupted by a stubborn little girl by the name of Tara Martin and the hours he and she were putting in Tad felt it was time they spent some real alone time together. Tad had the evening planned down to the T and he was overly excited about spending it with his wife. First she would be brought to him by car and then they would have dinner in the park and then… Well from there they would just see how the night ended. Anyway, after calling Opal to see if she could watch the kids, only to find out they were already with her, Tad went about making sure everything was set up. Instead of playing chauffeur himself he hired someone else to do it.
“Remember give her the flowers first and then the package,” Tad reminded Simon the man he hired to bring Dixie to him. “And then to the spot. Got it boss!” Tad sighed. “Alright. And call me if anything comes up.” “Tad, I got this,” Simon assured. “Alright. That’s precious cargo you’re handling so please be careful.” Simon sighed loudly before hanging up in his face. He’d been driving and chauffeuring people around for years and had never messed up once. As many times as he told Tad this you would think the man knew he whatever was requested of him he would get it done.
Simon eased behind the wheel of the car and soon headed to the Martin’s residence. Tad asked him to pick up Mrs. Martin and bring her to this park outside of town. Simple enough!
Sometime later Simon pulled up and soon made it up to the Martin’s home. He knocked a few times before standing erect and waiting with a bouquet of roses and a small envelope in his hands. Moments later he heard the locks and the door opened. “Mrs. Martin?” he asked way before he actually saw her. “Oh! I’m sorry… Is…” He looked away. “I’m sorry,” he apologized.

After she'd gotten the door unlocked and made her way to the bedroom, Dixie got the iron off the dress, kicked off her shoes and just made her way over to the front. Alright she was just in a slip, but the kids were out and her husband was here. Besides if she played her cards right he'd be seeing her far less covered up later that evening. "Oh..I'm so glad you're home, I.." Coming to the front Dixie realized to her horror, the man waiting at the door was certainly not Tad Martin. Unless Tad had gotten older, white haired, put on more weight and was moonlighting as a limo driver. "Oh shoot! I..oh.." After he had the decency to turn, Dixie hastily grabbed a jacket from the coat rack in the foyer and tossed it on before sheepishly turning to face him. "Hello.", she smiled shyly. "Evening Mrs. Martin, the name's Simon.", he introduced, shaking her hand. "Simon, It's nice to meet you. And I'm um, sorry about..." "It's alright." "Anyways, um..how can I, uh..help you?" "Well I was sent by Mr. Martin. And was asked to give you these.", smiled Simon. Remembering his instructions as he handed Dixie the bouquet. "Oh...how beautiful!", Dixie breathed, smelling the flowers before Simon handed her an envelope. "Oh, well now what's this?" Opening it up, tears filled her eyes when she noticed some tickets with Tad's handwriting on them. "'1 free chicken finger dinner with french fries, with Thaddeus J at the park..admit one.' Oh, Tad!" Jumping up and down a bit, beaming Dixie excused herself to go to the back, slipped into the first burn print free dress she could find, a basic little black number, some flats, and grabbed her purse before returning to the front. Hearing a thunderclap though she jumped a bit. "It's just been threatening all night..but I think the rain will hold off." "Yeah, I hope so.", Dixie nodded, grabbing an umbrella. Hitting the lights before locking up, she followed Simon to the waiting limo. Feeling giddier than a little kid as he opened the door for her. "Oooh, thank you very much, sir!", she giggled, sliding into the cushy leather backseat. Half wishing Tad was there with her and they could put the divider between them and the front seats to good use. But no sooner had Simon shut the door, that the sky opened and the rain began. "Well so much for it holding off." "It should be fine. I've driven in far worse than this." Feeling a bit more at ease, Dixie leaned back in the seat as Simon began driving. But it seemed to rain harder the closer they got to the destination. By the time they pulled onto the main road, it was coming down in buckets. "Man...it just keeps getting worse. We're meeting him just up the road, right?" "That was, the plan..", Simon sighed. It was getting to the point he could hardly see the road ahead of him. Even with the wipers and headlights on full blast. "I'm just, having a little trouble finding the exact area. I know we're close but I want to drop you off right at the spot." "Listen uh, you want me to call Tad? See if he can help us.." "It's okay, I should be able to get there. You just may be a little late, I can't go faster in this weather." "Oh, it's alright. No pressure." Dixie assured, before pulling out her phone and shooting Tad a text. "Hey baby. Sorry the rains holding us up. Wish I had u in the backseat to pass the time with. Should be there soon I hope! 2gthr4evr. "

After checking the setting for the umpteenth time since putting it out Tad took a step back and clasped his hands together. “Ooookay,” he sung to himself before checking his watch and later flinching when he heard a rumble in the distance. Turning around and checking the dark sky he grumbled. “Alright. The weather man said no chance of rain tonight. Don’t ruin this for me,” he said to no one, but at the same time the big man upstairs. Tad had been trying to figure out a way to spend some time with his wife seeing as they hadn’t been able to and this was the perfect way. Just the two of them eating chicken fingers under the stars. It was their thing! Once again Tad checked the area. “Stop it!” He admonished himself turning from the table and taking a seat. If they didn’t stop now he would more than likely switch something else up and throw everything off. With that in mind Tad just well enough alone and waited. Sometime later Tad found himself jumping out of his seat when he felt something drop onto his shoulder and soak through his shirt. “What the,” he mumbled, looking up and before he could fudge cakes and cookies he was being drenched! “No! Dammit!” He hissed rushing to save what he could and making his way to his car. The spot he had set up beforehand hadn’t been far from the road, but as Tad made a dash towards it he knew that was impossible. By the time Tad made it his hair was matted to his face, he clothes were soaked completely through and the food carton… The poor chicken fingers he had picked up especially for the woman in his life were ruined. Tad couldn’t stop swearing as he finally jumped in and closed the door. “Great, just great,” Tad sighed, laying his head back against the headrest and closing his eyes. Before he could take a minute to catch his breath his phone started beeping. He sat up and pulled it out of his wet pocket. It came as a shock to him when he saw the phone was even still working. Anyway, opening the message he found himself chuckling at Dixie’s message and quickly replied back. “Sounds very-very tempting. ”After sending the message Tad called Simon to see exactly where they were. “Uh… Actually we’re not too far, but I can honestly say I can’t see anything in this rain.” “When you not to far, what exactly do you mean?” “Uh....” Simon did a ho-hum sound and snorted. “Probably about ten or fifteen minutes away. But don’t worry I’ll get her there just as soon as it slacks up.” Tad sighed. “That’s precious cargo you’re driving around. One harmed hair and it’ll be me and you. Understand?” Simon chuckled. Tad didn’t and that was when Simon cleared his throat. “Right! Got you.” “Alright,” Tad warned before saying goodbye and sending another text to Dixie. “Simon says you’re about ten or fifteen minutes away. Going to give it a few more minutes before trying again. But until then… I want you to know I’m thinking about that backseat. Bet it’s warm. ”

While Simon drove at a snail's pace in the rain, Dixie let out a sigh and shifted a bit in the backseat. She always got antsy in traffic or on long car rides, or limo rides for that matter. But getting Tad's text happily distracted her. "What's so funny back there?" Simon teased, getting Dixie blushing before he took Tad's call. Staring out sadly at the raindrops traveling on the window, she snapped from her daze at Tad's other text. Groaning at the fifteen minutes, she giggled and blushed at the rest of the message. "Aw sweetie do whatever you have 2 but all I care about is seeing u. fifteen min is too long a wait. it is warm but could be hotter. stay out of that rain tho if its cold, i don't want u getting sick! (tho i wouldn't mind playing doctor later... ) Sending her text off, Dixie was getting even more restless. They were moving slower than a snail now. And she could tell Simon was just as agitated. Finally he just swore and pulled over again. "What..what's wrong?" "Mrs. Martin, I..I'm sorry but, if it was just rain holding us up we'd have been there. It's just these side roads. There's just gonna be a ton of mud up ahead and, if I drive through it we'll be stuck for sure, this limo's not built for off roading. I really can't keep going until the rain stops for good. I'm sorry.", he sighed, genuinely apologetic. "I..It's alright, you've been more than helpful tonight." Dixie said honestly, but knew there was no way she could hike the rest of the way in her heels. She'd have to call Tad to come and get her. And nervously, dialed before he picked up on the first ring. "Tad...baby I'm sorry but, Simon says the limo can't go anymore on these roads without getting stuck in the mud. I think you'll have to, um, come and pick me up. I..I'm sorry. Here you go planning this beautiful evening for us and, now it's getting ruined." She apologized, even though this really wasn't her fault she just felt bad. And wanted nothing more than to give her husband a huge hug.

After sending off the previous message to Dixie, Tad had yet to put his phone down. Texting was never something he favored but when she returned to him he learned to love it and have even gotten a lot better with it. Happily, Tad opened the message that just came through and grinned like a Cheshire cat. “*cough-cough* *shudder* Doctor, doctor .” He replied before finally taking notice of the weather which had changed dramatically. It was coming down in sheets! Sighing heavily he clicked on the heat because he was really starting to get cold when his phone rung. The phone barely rung that one time before he picked it up. “What happened?” He asked already knowing it was Dixie before she could speak and before he even really looked at the screen. Hearing there was no way Simon could get Dixie to him and the sadness in her voice made Tad’s mood deflate. “Are you apologizing?” Tad asked with a chuckle. “Baby it wasn’t your fault. Nobody’s fault, but the weatherman for not being more accurate,” he scoffed. “Listen tell Simon that even if the rain clears up before I get there to just sit tight. I’ll be there as soon as I can… And you just relax. You knight and shining armor is on the way!” After a few minutes Tad hung up, turned his beams on to the highest setting and pulled out. He sat erect and hunched over to really see. The wipers were going as fast as they could, but it was still a little difficult to see. Even for someone who knew the area somewhat like the back of his hand Tad had the hardest time finding his way out. SO he knew for sure anybody who didn’t know would have been going through hell and high way, no pun intended. Anyway, what would have normally taken fifteen minutes had taken nearly an hour. There came a point where the water looked too high for him to pass through, and then there was those deep and slick turns. Nobody in their right mind would do anything like that, but at the moment Tad wasn’t. Nearly an hour after he last talked to Dixie, Tad came up on a vehicle whose emergency lights were flashing. Pulling to the side he pulled his phone out and called Simon to make sure it was him or someone else who needed help. “I’m sorry Tad. I tried to get her there, but it was just too much,” Simon instantly said. Tad chuckled. “Relax. You did right by not going any further. You would have gotten stuck back there. Too much water for that limo of yours to handle,” he joked. “Talk about the ride why don’t you.” “I just did! Uh… Are your emergency lights blinking?” He asked and then started flashing his own. “Can you see mine?” Simon made a noise. “Yep.” “Alright. I’m going to get Dixie and then I want you to follow me out.” “Got it!” Simon yelped before hanging up. Tad put his phone in the cup holder and pulled up as close as he could to the limo before he got out and just because went to check the trunk. Surprisingly there was an umbrella back there. “Wish I would have known earlier,” he mumbled, letting it up, not that he needed it anymore and ran to the limo door.

Blushing about five shades of red at Tad's text, Dixie got a devious smirk on her face. At this rate who knew if they'd make it through dinner.
"Yeah, well.." she shrugged when he asked if she apologized. Hearing him laugh at her she blushed and pouted, sure he could see it over the phone. "Ugh, shut up!", she protested, giggling before he brought up the weatherman that got her groaning as well. Hearing his instructions she nodded. "Okay I'll try. And hey don't forget your sword!" She smirked, getting a raised eyebrow from Simon as she hung up and passed along Tad's message. Unfortunately the drive that normally took a few minutes was taking nearly an hour. And now Dixie wasn't just frustrated and antsy, but scared too. Tad was a good driver but so was she when the rain caused her to go off the road. "Mrs. Martin?" "Huh..what?" "Nothing you just looked a little distracted. Are you alright?" "I...sorry, how long has it been since he called?" "About 45 minutes." "Oh.." Tugging at her star she kept looking out the window. Because of the rain clouds covering everything, no way could she make a wish. Just making her more edgy. "Mrs. Martin I'm sure everything's fine. With this weather he has to take his time." "No I know..I know.", she stammered. Checking her watch for the umpteenth time she sighed. It had been almost an hour now with no sign of him. Leaning back in the seat she shut her eyes just long enough to come up with a quick prayer that nothing had happened to him.
Then finally, she saw the emergency lights and felt relief plus giddiness kick in. Moreso when his car pulled up alongside and he came over to open her door. "Oh Tad, honey." Sliding over so her feet were dangling out of the limo, reaching up Dixie cupped his wet face in her hands, laughing all the while. Even though he was soaked to the skin and dripping, he had the umbrella out and open for her sake. She was relieved to see him, amazed that this night had gone so horribly wrong, and just more in love with him standing there soaked through but going out of his way to keep her dry.
Quickly she stood and gave him a steamy kiss, slipping her arms around his neck. But when he pulled for more, Dixie pulled back and sneakily reached for the handle of the umbrella. "Doesn't look like this has done you much good." Snatching it from him, she quickly shut it and in a matter of seconds, was just as drenched as he was. Tad looked on shocked but she couldn't care less. They'd danced in rain that was colder than this back in the day. And she'd been stuck in a stuffy limo for over an hour. If he was willing to get caught in a storm to give her a special night, the least she could do was do the same. "What? C'mon, one drowned rat deserves another, right?" She giggled. And heading towards the car, skipped through a puddle or two and beckoned for him to follow.

Tad must have a looked like a kid against the window of a candy store when Dixie pulled back from the kiss. There was a growl getting ready to slip from his lips when suddenly the umbrella was falling from his hands. “Not really,” he said with a shrugged and went to catch it when Dixie snatched from him. “Dixie, what are you--” It was too late. She was soaked through and through and skipping to the car. Stunned for a second or two Tad finally turned around and watched her.
“You’re nuts!” He called out taking off behind her and wrapping his arms around her waist he picked her up and twirled her around. If they hadn’t been out in the middle of the street Tad would have liked nothing more than take her right then and there. Her clothes and hair sticking to her the way it did was doing quite a number on him.
Leaning her against the car, Tad locked her in and moved in to kiss her neck. “If both of us get sick whose going to take care of who?” Even as he spoke about being sick he wasn’t in a rush to end this moment between them. It was the most fun they had in a long while!

"What! What did you just call me!!" Playing like she was highly offended, she was set to stomp off until Tad winked at her, with a gleam in his eyes meaning trouble. "Oh! Oh..no no no!" She shrieked between giggles. But kept playing and trying to outrun him. Not an easy feat in the shoes she had on, especially with the mud straight ahead of her. In the nick of time though he grabbed her by the waist, swept her up in his arms and twirled her, making her feel lighter than air. Giggling like a little kid, seeing that boyish grin on Tad's face Dixie melted. He looked even more handsome when he laughed. Always had.
Finally he set her down and before she could blink, he had her trapped between him and the side of the car. "Huh, what..right here? I..eee! Taad!" Her giggles turning to purrs and soft sighs of approval as he nuzzled her neck, Dixie heard him asking about something but it took him pulling back for it to register. "Good question, uh. I guess I didn't think that far ahead.." Brushing some wet hair out of Tad's eyes, she let her hand cup his cheek and then leaned in closer, budding her nose with his. "What about we just, take care of eachother?" She suggested, kissing him tenderly on the lips.

Taking her by her waist, Tad pulled her flushed against him. “Sounds like a plan,” he whispered, returning the kiss. Tad was about to give her a more passionate kiss when the sound of a horn honking interrupting him. Flipping his eyes in the direction of the noise, he saw it was Simon and sneered at him. “Come on. I told Simon to follow me out and I’m sure he’s not up for sticking around to watch us christen the car,” he teased before giving a promising kiss and pulling back. After helping her into the car and throwing the useless umbrella back in the trunk, he got in and buckled up.
“Are you hungry?” Tad asked finally. He was so focused on getting them out of the bad weather that he hadn’t said much, hadn’t even taken his eyes off the road for one second for the fear of something would happen. “You haven’t eaten at all today. I’m sure you’re hungry. Dumb question,” he rambled. “I think I saw a fast food place some ways up. It’s just a matter of getting there through this mess. Getting home for that matter,” he sighed.
Though he had the time of his life out in the rain some minutes ago he was still heartbroken that the date he had put so much into was ruined. Dixie hadn’t even gotten a chance to see it and… “I’m sorry about this. I know earlier I said it wasn’t anybody’s fault, but I feel like it’s mine. Lived here majority of my life and I should know by now that this time of the year the weather is tricky and I… I should have paid more attention or put a lot more thought into the possibility of rain,” he started rambling again.

"Perfect.", grinned Dixie before Tad returned the kiss. And was on the verge of making it steamier before a car horn interrupted. "Ugh..you know he was so accommodating all night.." Rolling her eyes, she giggled at Tad's comment before they kissed and hopped in the car. "Well yeah, kinda.", she shrugged. "Don't worry though okay? Just, focus on the road, my stomach can wait." Trying to reassure him, Dixie saw a frown still creased his handsome face. His babbling would normally make her laugh, but seeing him so sad and guilty just made her heart break. "Hey, enough talk like that. You just told me nobody was at fault and you're right! Same as always.", she grinned as she rubbed his shoulder, but saw he was still looking blue. "Oh, baby.." Smiling softly Dixie gave his hand not resting on the wheel a gentle squeeze, til briefly he looked her in the eye again.
"If you think a little rain is gonna stand in the way of our having a perfect night together you've thought wrong. I..I know you had this all planned and that all you set up would've been amazing. But...so is just, being here with you, right now. Soaked through clothes and all.", she smiled.
"I just, look at all you did tonight to give the two of us a special evening. I..it doesn't matter we got rained out. I don't even care, really. I just keep thinking of you, walking up alongside the limo, dripping wet under that umbrella just, to make sure I stayed dry and had a perfect night. Baby, I'd be a fool not to know how much you care. How much you love me. And knowing that, that's all I really need. Forget about everything else." Dixie said, misting up a bit in spite of the rain. And decided to change the subject a bit.
"And you know, if it makes you feel any better you're not the only one with jinxed plans for tonight. I had this whole plan, I was um...gonna surprise you with a romantic dinner back at the house. Even tracked down some Orsini for us and, made your favorite dessert, but..the chicken burnt... along with my dress. I think there were some things I could've paid better attention to too.", she admitted sheepishly.

“Yea, but still,” Tad sighed after hearing her say them being the way they were. Together and soaked to the bone was just fine. Any other time he would have agreed with her. Any other time he would have saw this as an opportunity to have more fun in the rain, but because it was first time in a long time since they been alone he wanted everything to, if not perfect, go off without a hitch.
Tad glanced over at Dixie upon hearing that she also planned something for them. He was about to ask her why she hadn’t said anything when he remembered she said it was going to be a surprise. Had she told him about it, it would have no longer been one. Duh, Thaddeus, he thought. “Great minds think alike,” he smirked, squeezing her hand. Suddenly, Tad became curious. Not only had he remembered her saying it was a surprise he also remembered something else. Clearing his throat and making a noise he tilted his head to the side. “I’m curious… How did you burn your dress?” He looked over at her again with raised brows and a scrunched face.

Seeing that Tad was still a little bummed, Dixie didn't know what else to tell him. She'd have preferred the evening go off as planned to but, at this point she was just content to be with the man she loved. And she just hope he'd feel more upbeat as the evening went on. "Yeah they certainly do.", she grinned. Squeezing his hand right back, before he asked her about her dress. And blushing she rolled her eyes. "It was just my being stupid. It was this, blue-gray silk one I'd gotten special for tonight. And I was in the middle of smoothing some wrinkles out of it when I smelled dinner burning, so I ran to the kitchen but left the iron flat on the dress and, it left a big print on it.", she said sadly. "And then of course, in the middle of everything Simon shows up. But I expected it'd be you at the door so I ran over in just my slip to answer it and,...well. He turned so I could throw one of your jackets on and didn't see a thing but..ugh."
Sighing she leaned back in her seat, and rubbed Tad's arm with a slight smile on her face. "But hey, things can only get better from now on, right? Fate can't be against us all night.", she smiled. Hoping against hope that would be the case.

Not wanting too, but having absolutely no control Tad burst out laughing. He laughed so hard his sides started to hurt but that soon stopped when heard that Simon showed up and she answered in her slip. “Are you sure he didn’t see anything?” He asked with a little hint of anger. His was very sure that his friend wouldn’t do anything, it was just knowing that the man could have very well gotten a little peek at his wife’s body that just didn’t sit right with him.
“Yea, whatever you say,” Tad grumbled still a little hot under the collar about the slip accident. Then he started to think maybe he was ticked because the man probably saw a hell of a lot more than he had… Hell no! He thought. That isn’t the case. For the next couple of minutes nothing could be heard but the engine and sound of the rain pounding against the car. Later, when he looked into his rearview mirror he saw Simon flashing his lights and then turn off a street. “And then there were two,” he said letting her know that Simon was gone.
With Simon out of the way Tad could now focus on getting them home. The rain was still coming down in sheets, but because he knew where he was he had no problem getting there. But obviously that little thing called fate that his wife mentioned earlier decided to intervene because before Tad knew it the gas light clicked on and the indicator sounded that it was time to get some gas. “Ah…” He sighed, hearing Dixie sigh as well. He looked at her out the corner of his eye and smiled. “Will you stop worrying. We can make it home.”

Seeing Tad burst out laughing, Dixie would've laughed along with if he hadn't been laughing at her. "What?! Oh..you jerk!" Swatting at him playfully, she watched his whole demeanor change after telling him Simon saw her slip. "I'm positive, Tad!" Seeing him grumble, Dixie laughed lightly and smiled. "Baby I swear..you're my only chauffeur today that's seen a thing. And play your cards right you'll be seeing more tonight.", she winked. After comfortable silence set in and Simon headed off, Dixie heard the indicator on the gas light and bit her lip. Tonight of all nights... "I'm not worried..", she shrugged. Tad knew better but she didn't care. All she wanted was to get back to the house and the bedroom they had all to themselves tonight. But it did not seem like the car was going to get them there. It was starting to sputter already. "Okay you know...forget getting home. Let's just get this car off the road before we get stuck in the middle of it. Maybe we can, find a hotel up the road or something.", she hoped, before her stomach made a noisy growling sound. She'd forgotten how hungry she was. "Even a motel room with a vending machine down the hall would suffice."
