After escaping her abusive husband Axel Green, Janet moved to Pine Valley into the Chandler Mansion, then owned by her sister Natalie. Unlike her twin, Janet was frumpy and awkward, and having suffered emotional and verbal abuse from her mother, had no self esteem and a mental disorder. Indicated when she spoke with her reflection in the mirror. Janet then set her sights on Trevor Dillon, and after throwing Natalie in a well, posed as her and proceeded to marry her husband.
When Haley Vaughn, Trevor's niece, caught onto her scheme, Janet tried to shoot her. But later on trial for the crime, Janet learned she was pregnant.
Also, when Janet discovered Will Cortlandt was abusing Haley, wanting to do Trevor a favor, she bludgeoned Will to death with a crowbar. She also tried to kill Natalie again, but went into labor forcing her sister to deliver her daughter, Amanda, who Natalie raised as her own until perishing in a car crash.
Meanwhile Janet received plastic surgery in prison, and came back to town on good behavior, with a new face and identity as Jane Cox. But she didn't manage to get Trevor down the aisle before her scheme was unraveled by Harold, the Dillon family dog.
Janet became ostracized by the town, including Dixie Martin who started a campaign to get her back in jail. Dixie was later targeted by Janet, in the form of being stalked by an actor posing as her dead brother, and Janet putting the moves on and blackmailing her uncle.
Later, Janet began targeting Laurel Banning who was dating Trevor, and planned to set off a bomb at their wedding. After fleeing the church she was struck by lightning and discovered by a hermit named Pierce Riley. Presumed dead by PV, Janet lived with Pierce and a homeless girl Laura Kirk.
Later she came back to town, but was arrested following the accidental shooting of Laurel, despite being innocent. While in jail, Pierce fell in love with Brooke English, and Brooke adopted Laura. Feeling like Brooke had stolen her newfound family, she vowed revenge and after being cleared of Laurel's murder, blackmailed Dr. Jonathan Kinder to make her over like Brooke. When the doctor locked her in an attic, Janet, with the help of Skye Chandler and Erica Kane, teamed up to take the madman down. Janet also was desperate to be part of Amanda's life, and abandoned her vendetta against Brooke to do so. When Amanda was investigating and fell into the well where Natalie had been, Janet rescued her and the two bonded. Amanda also learned Janet was her real mother, and later accepted her as such. Trevor also proposed to Janet, but having sworn on Natalie's grave not to remarry him, declined and hired an actor to pose as her ex Axel, to remarry and disqualify her from marrying Trevor. When the real Axel appeared, the plan fell through, but after getting Natalie's ghostly blessing, she and Trevor married with the blessing of the town, including Dixie.
The couple were stable until Janet's former cellmate Sophie Malinowski, came and threatened her family while demanding money, and Janet's mirror reflection hallucinations began again. After bashing Sophie's skull in with a giant candy cane and later a crowbar, killing her, Trevor disposed of the evidence but was brought in for questioning, and confessed to the murder. When Janet was later told by mirror Janet to kill Jackson Montgomery, Janet crowbarred the mirror vanquishing the persona. With Jackson's assistance, she and Trevor were cleared of all charges, and the family moved to Colorado.
Later on however, Janet returned to PV to be with her adult daughter, off her meds and living in an abandoned warehouse. Strange incidents began occurring over town, a result of Janet never getting over what happened with Sophie. After blowing up Erica's Mardi Gras Ball, killing Ethan Cambias, Janet kidnapped Babe Carey and her son hoping to raise Little Adam as Rembrandt Green. It was also revealed she murdered Trevor when his body was found in a freezer. She was arrested and placed in Oak Haven, but later was broken out by Adam Chandler, him wanting her to kidnap Tad and Krystal's daughter Jenny. The plan was foiled by Jamie and Babe, and Janet was put back in Oakhaven.
But she returned recently after learning Amanda and Jake had married and that she had a grandson. After stalking Amanda online and stealing but mailing back her wedding ring, Janet hid in Amanda and Jake's closet, knocked the officer who was supervising Amanda and Trevor out, and threatened to kill the officer and Jake, while kidnapping Trevor, if Amanda refused to leave Jake and come to Europe with her. Amanda and Jake managed to get her in police custody, where she later had a stroke after a confrontation with Amanda, when she informed her she killed Trevor believing Amanda loved him more, and that Amanda was doomed to be her 'mother's daughter'. After being released from the hospital, Janet was put back into Oakhaven under strict supervision.

Some time had passed since Janet's most recent escapade in Pine Valley. And now that her mind was clear and her meds were in regular supply, the reality of everything she'd done came crashing down on her like constant waves. The words she'd said to Amanda still replayed in her mind. Her dooming her to live her life was terrible and cut her to the core to think about. The last thing she wanted was her daughter ever turning out like her. But her declaration that she'd killed Trevor out of jealousy was the worst of it all. Janet loved Trevor, so much so she'd committed more crimes than she cared to think about. And when she'd realized her helping him to chill out had been literal with the freezer situation, she was beyond heartbroken by it.
Since then she'd willingly stayed in prison and done her damnedest to get well. But then Adam Chandler came demanding her release, all for the sake of a baby that he'd convinced her wasn't safe with Tad and Krystal and needed to be adopted out, and she knew she had to help. While she trusted Tad implicitly with children, that Carey woman was another story. She'd thought the same of Babe and Little Adam. Rembrandt would've been better off with her. At least though Dixie was back to help, per her notepad prediction.
Still though, she'd gone and compromised her mental health again with that adventure, and wasn't near equipped enough to go and see Amanda and her son in law and grandchild.
When she had on that computer driven whim, she'd blown it all to hell. Her one saving grace was the stroke that she'd had. Getting treated and healed properly for that, was helping her more than any of her meds. She was getting real care and plus, soon enough she could start physical therapy at PVH. Under supervision but still, it was out of this hell hole and back in the real world with her daughter and grandson, the only family that mattered to her. If they'd still have her that is.
