Arts & Crafts ~ Lily & Kathy

Kathy had been doing a lot of crafts lately, especially ones that involved summer things, like flowers and the sun. She was doing really well in her school art class before it had let out for the summer, though she had a few projects she had to do over the two month break. She knew Lily liked crafts and had asked her mom if she could go over for a visit so they could play.

On her way to the Montgomery household, she’d been reminded of how Lily didn’t like loud noises or bright colours like red. As she’d walked by a little garden on the way to the house, she’d picked a yellow flower for her friend. She knew she couldn’t touch Lily or play rough around her, and as she reached the doorknob she knocked gently, standing back and holding up the flower with a beaming smile.

Lily looked at the clock on her desk, she had on her schedule that Kathy Martin would be coming over to make some crafts. She was looking forward to it all day. Kathy may not have been Lily's age, but she was a sweet girl, and as a child Lily hadn't gotten to have many playdates so she was glad to be able to enjoy them now that she was functioning better than she was as a child. She still had about 20 minutes before Kathy was due over so she headed downstairs to the kitchen. Most kids liked cookies and milk, she had learned that much from living with Miranda and Gabby. She was pretty sure Colton would like them too when he was a little older. Lily got ready a batch of cookies and put them into the oven, wanting them to still be warm and fresh when her new friend arrived.

The timer had just dinged, and Lily taken the cookies out of the oven when she heard the knock on the door. Lily smiled pleased that she had timed this out well, and that Kathy had in fact shown up like planned. Lily turned off the oven and hurried out to answer the door. She opened it up and smiled at her guest. "Hi Kathy...come on in" She invited her stepping aside to give the girl space. "That's a pretty flower"

“Hi Lily!” Kathy greeted with a huge smile before she headed in, slipping over her shoes on the matt. “I picked this flower for you.” She held it up for Lily to take before she looked around the house and a familiar smell caught her nose and she beamed.

“Did you make cookies? They smell really good,” she complimented and then stepped a bit further inside the house before stopping. “What kind of crafts did you want to make today? We could do paintings and pictures and I know you don’t like red so we can use purple and yellow and green.” She looked up at Lily a she spoke and then got an idea.

“Do you think we could make a banner for JR? When he gets better of course,” she suggested with a small shrug. “Or we could just do regular crafts and things?”

"You did?" Lily said a bit surprised as Kathy said she picked a flower for her. She wasn't sure why the girl would do that, but it made her feel special that she had. "Thank you Kathy, that was very kind of you" She said taking the flower from her to put in a vase in the kitchen.

She nodded as Kathy asked if she made cookies. "I made them for us while we do crafts, they just got out of the oven, so if you like them warm we can have them now, or wait about 20 minutes and they should be cooler" She informed the younger girl. She appreciated that Kathy agreed not to use red, it was very considerate of her, something Lily knew not all children were, but she was lucky that those in her life seemed to be.

"I think the banner for your brother sounds like a nice idea. Maybe I can make one for my step-mom Erica too...she's not sick but she's going to have a baby, and pregnant women like to be pampered"

“You’re welcome Lily, I’m glad you like it,” Kathy beamed up at her friend. The smell of cookies made her mouth water but she knew if they touched the cookies now they’d be too warm and melt all over their fingers if they had them, so she shook her head, blonde pigtails bobbing.

“I don’t mind waiting, but they sure do smell good,” she admitted, greedily sniffing the air a bit before looking back at Lily. “I hope JR will like the banner. He isn’t feeling good but the doctor says he’ll get better and I wish on a star every night hoping he will soon.” As Lily spoke of making one for Erica, Kathy nodded and then grinned, a new baby was an exciting thing.

“I think Erica would like one too! We can make it big and hang it up for when she has the baby,” she grinned as she headed over to the table where the crafts were all laid out. “Is it a boy or a girl baby? Do you know if they have a name yet?”
